A virtual private network (VPN) extends the campus network across the Internet and enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the campus network. Applications running on a computing device, e.g., a laptop, desktop, or smartphone, across a VPN may therefore benefit from the functionality, security, and management of the campus network. DO I NEED A VPN?
The majority of EWU's online services do not require VPN. Here are the lists of services to help you determine if VPN is needed:
EWU's VPN utilizes what is called a split tunnel. Any traffic not destined for EWU-hosted services is not passed over the VPN. For example, your email is sent directly to/from Microsoft Office 365 and never passes over the VPN.
INSTALLING VPN
If you need VPN to access an EWU service, here are the installation instructions for GlobalProtect VPN:
- Installing GlobalProtect on Windows
- Installing GlobalProtect on Mac
- For Linux, we recommend this open source client: https://github.com/yuezk/GlobalProtect-openconnect Note, no support is provided by EWU IT for VPN connectivity from Linux. If you are comfortable using Linux, you should be able to add and maintain third-party packages or build them using Make as needed. The CLI version can be used without a license.
