Computer Lease Program FAQ
Why Lease?
The benefit of leasing computers is that it allows you to accurately budget and operationalize computer costs for your department. It also ensures that computers are replaced on a regular basis.
How long is the Lease cycle?
4 years.
How many cycles are there per year?
There are two lease cycles per year: July 1st and October 1st. We recommend that you order faculty and staff computers in October. The summer lease is primarily for Classroom and Lab computers
Can I Lease outside of the July and October windows?
No.
Isn’t a lease more expensive than purchasing?
Yes. Leasing a computer is roughly 10% more expensive than purchasing a computer outright. However lease charges are stable, predictable and ensure that your department always has up to date equipment to better serve your staff.
What type of devices are available to lease?
Any supported EWU computer that can be purchased can also be leased. Specifics are available on our purchasing website.
How do I Lease computers?
To start a lease on a new computer, use the New Computer Lease service request.
To renew a lease on an existing computer, use the Renew Computer Lease service request.
Can I lease accessories with my new computer?
Desktop computers arrive with a wired USB keyboard, a wired USB mouse and 1 monitor.
Additional monitors can be leased, but must be requested in the New Computer Lease service request
Laptop computers arrive with a charging adapter.
Other accessories are not to be leased and must be purchased by your department. This includes docks for laptops. Submit an IT Help Desk ticket for assistance in picking the right one for you.
Can I keep or purchase the leased computer?
No, all leased equipment must be returned to the leasing company at the end of the 4-year lease term.
We want to replace leased computer(s) that are nearing the end of their term. When is the latest I can submit my request?
Replacement leasing orders need to be submitted to EWU IT before June 20th (for the July 1st lease term) or September 20th (for the October 1st lease term)
I've requested to lease new equipment. When will I receive it?
July 1st Lease Term: Equipment will begin to be ordered April 1st. Deployments will begin as equipment arrives, which is expected to be mid to early May. IT will collect the old lease machine from you when the new equipment is deployed.
October 1st Lease Term: Equipment will begin to be ordered August 1st. Deployments will begin as equipment arrives, which is expected to be mid to early September. IT will collect the old lease machine from you when the new equipment is deployed.
What needs to be returned when my lease is up?
All leased equipment and cables must be returned in good, working condition.
*Any costs from loss or damage not covered by the warranty is the departments responsibility*
Laptops - The laptop and the original charging adapter must be returned in good working condition, the charger cannot have any frayed or damaged cords.
Displays - Power cord and display cable.
Desktop Computers - Keyboard, mouse and power cord.
My equipment is damaged or lost, what do I do?
*Any costs from loss or damage not covered by the warranty is the departments responsibility*
Submit an IT help desk ticket immediately so we can get the damaged equipment repaired prior to returning it to the leasing company. Lost or damaged Laptop charging cables will need to be replaced by the department.
What can I do to prepare for my new computer?
Follow the I'm getting a new computer solution article to get started. You will need to ensure any files you need are synced with or moved to a supported Cloud Storage solution. You can submit a ticket to EWU IT for help getting this done.
