General program policies:

• Attend 100% of all AUAP and PE classes.
• Provide accurate travel plans for the travel breaks.
• Follow all EWU rules and regulations.
• Follow all Washington state and federal laws.

Attendance and Participation Policy
Active participation in classes is essential for improving your English and taking advantage of opportunities in AUAP. To actively participate, you need to attend classes every day and come to classes on time. You must also demonstrate a positive attitude of respect and cooperation toward your teachers and your classmates. All AUAP universities have the following attendance and participation policy.

  1. The goal is 100% attendance.
  2. Two tardies equal one absence. A tardy is being from one minute to 10 minutes late for class
  3. Your participation, conduct and attitude will be monitored throughout the program.
  4. There are no excused absences. ONLY serious unusual circumstances (such as hospital stays) will be reviewed by the AUAP director and the AUAP Committee for consideration as excused absences.
  5. If you miss 20 hours of classroom instruction, including absences from Physical Education classes, you will receive a warning letter from the AUAP Committee. A copy of this letter will be sent to your parents.
  6. If you continue to miss class after receiving the warning letter and your total absences reach 35 hours of instruction, the AUAP Committee will dismiss you from AUAP, and you will be required to return to Japan immediately.
  7. If you receive two warning letters of any type (attendance, alcohol,or behavior), you will be repatriated.

NOTE: According to the AUAP Pledge, which you signed when you registered for AUAP, the AUAP Committee has the right to repatriate you (send you back to Japan) at any time regardless of the number of absences.

Behavior Policy
All students are expected to:
• participate actively in class.
• show respect for teachers and classmates at all times.
• not talk while the teacher is talking.
• speak English only in the classroom (unless given permission to speak Japanese).
• not sleep during class.

Homework
You should expect to do about 12-15 hours of homework per week. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what homework was assigned and to hand it in when you return to class. Homework that is one day late will be graded 10% lower. Homework handed in more than one day late will not be accepted.

English Only Rule
You must speak only English in all your AUAP classes. Speak only English from the moment your class begins. It is up to you and your classmates to enforce this policy. If you have difficulty understanding anything during the class, you should:

  • ask the speaker to repeat what was said in English or if you still do not understand, you may request permission from the teacher to ask a classmate for help in Japanese for that question only.

You will be keeping a daily record of your own participation and use of English only which will be turned in to your teacher and become part of your Attendance and Participation grade.

What Your Teacher Will Expect From You:
• Be on time to class.
• Speak only English in class.
• Actively participate in class.
• Complete homework assignments on time.
• Be willing to work in pairs and groups.
• Ask questions and share your opinions.
• Maintain eye contact with your teacher.
• Take responsibility for your own learning.
• Show respect for your classmates and your teachers in class.
• Honestly evaluate your own participation and use of English in class every day.
• Stay awake in class.

Grading Procedures
Your homework, class work, quizzes, exams, class participation, use of English and attendance are all included in your grade for each class. Grades for Term One will be given to the students within the first week of Term Two. Grades for Term Two will be available from Asia University after you return to Japan. Grades are determined in the following way:

Homework = all assignments completed outside of class.
Evaluation = quizzes, tests, special projects or presentations.

Section Placement
All students will be divided into sections. Your placement will be based on:
• the TOEIC you took in Japan before participating in AUAP.
• recommendations from your Freshman English teacher at Asia University.
• your placement interview during Orientation Week in AUAP.
• a writing sample given during Orientation Week in AUAP.

You should expect to be with some students who may have higher or lower reading, writing, listening or speaking skills. Don’t worry that you are in the wrong section if some of your classmates have some higher or lower skills than you do. This is a normal part of learning with other students in a classroom.

Changing Sections
Usually, students will not need to change sections after they are placed. If, after one full week of classes, you feel a need to change sections because your class seems much too difficult or much too easy, follow this procedure:

  1. Go to the office of the Curriculum Coordinator (LAH 109A).
  2. Explain to the Curriculum Coordinator your reason for wanting to change sections.
  3. The instructors will then meet to discuss your class performance and decide whether your section placement should be changed.
  4. The Curriculum Coordinator will meet with you to inform you of the decision and let you know what your final section placement will be.

Physical Education Classes

  • You will take physical education (PE) classes with EWU students two hours per week during fall, winter, or spring quarters.
  • Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays or on Tuesdays and Thursdays during fall, winter, and spring quarters.
  • You will make choices from a variety of fitness and individual and team sports, and be assigned one of your choices.
  • Most equipment will be provided for you.
  • You will need to have sports shoes that are used ONLY for PE for basketball, volleyball, racquetball, and all aerobics classses. Do not wear sandals to your PE classes.
  • NO CHANGES in PE are allowed once you receive your assignment.

AUAP Sports Nights and Volleyball Tournament are a required part of the AUAP PE program. You must attend these events and attendance will be taken. All students are encouraged to participate in the sports offered. However, if a student chooses not to play, he/she must still attend the event and be a spectator.

TOEIC at EWU
All AUAP students will be required to take the TOEIC at the end of the program. You will not need to register or pay for this exam. You will be informed of the date and time of this exam during American Life Class. Your Integrated English Skills class includes instruction in English grammar and test-taking practice to help you prepare for this exam. The test scores will be sent to Asia University and will be distributed to you after you return to Japan.
